Program:  The History of the Hammock

                   By: Sisco Dean

Sisco Dean is a member of the Flagler County Historical Society, which is located at 204 & 206 Moody Blvd., Bunnell.

As a genealogist he shared his research on the History of the Hammock.  His talk was both informative and interesting.

Mr. Dean shared that our present day barrier island came into existence on Monday, May 13, 1907, when the waters of the Matanzas Bay and the Halifax River were joined.  He walked us through our early inhabitants, the French and the Spaniards who arrived in 1560; the British gaining control of Florida in 1763; the Spaniards capturing Pensacola in 1781 and their regaining control of the remainder of FL in 1784.

We heard about our early “Movers and Shakers” Lieutenant Colonel John Graham, Abraham Dupont, and Joseph Marion Hernandez.  From this point Sisco carried us forward through the Transportation Infrastructure and Florida’s Big Dig, which lead us to our “Later Movers and Shakers” Claude Grady Varn and William Edgar (Ed) Johnson.

John Byrd adjourned the meeting at 8:35.

Respectfully submitted,
